  • National Park

    The Torres del Paine National Park was created on the 13th of May in 1959 and forms part of the National System of Protected Wild Areas of the State of Chile. On April 28th in 1978 it was declared Biosphere Reverse by the UNESCO.

    It has 227.298 hectors and altitudes that vary between 50 and 3050 meters. Being the following the main characteristics:

    •    Forests
    •    Tundra
    •    Mountains
    •    Ice Fields
    •    Rivers and lakes
    •    Morreins

    Torres del Paine Park

    Its natural origin dates from 12,000 years ago, when the first settlers arrived in the “Austral” Patagonia (southernmost), followed by Tehuelches (“People of the South” in Mapudungun), who inhabited a big area of the park.

    The use of the land for breeding cattle and the damaged that this caused in some areas made the government and community to be concerned about the preservation of such a rich and attractive zone. This is how began the idea of the promulgation of this National Park.
