Sarmiento Lake is located at the access of Las Torres del Paine National Park, in the Portería and Guardería Sarmiento.
It’s situated in a vegetative area of Patagonian steppe, where two German pioneers had their southern base of operations at the beginning of XX century.
There are in this sector cave paintings of ethnic Aonikenk (Tehuelches or Patagones), which can be visited by tourists.
Unlike other lakes, the waters of Sarmiento Lake have glacial origin and are characterized by a deep blue color with white edges, which is produced by the accumulation of calcium carbonate. Those elements make the Lake one of the most attractive place in the park Las Torres del Paine.
In addition, during the spring you can see a wide variety of flora, many guanacos and other birds. The lake has also a viewpoints from which you can observe the Cordillera Paine in all its magnitude.
